Intel, Aramco to launch first Open RAN development hub in Saudi Arabia

Aramco Digital and Intel plan to establish Saudi Arabia’s first Open RAN Development Center. This facility aims to promote innovation and contribute to the digital transformation landscape in the country.

The partnership aims to fast-track the development and implementation of Open RAN technologies. This collaboration also aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which places an emphasis on technological advancements and economic diversification.

Aramco Digital’s CEO, Tareq Amin, says that the establishment of the Open RAN Development Center is anticipated to foster digital advancement by promoting collaboration, skill development and the creation of a thriving technology ecosystem.

“At the heart of this collaboration is the creation of a vibrant pool of local capabilities for advanced 5G and future 6G technologies,” adds Amin.

Open RAN transforms wireless network architecture, offering flexibility, interoperability and innovation. The collaboration between Aramco Digital and Intel taps into the potential of Open RAN, unlocking  economic possibilities.

Aramco Digital and Intel will collaborate on the Open RAN Development Center, an innovation hub that promotes collaboration and fosters advancements within the industry. The center also focuses on developing local talent through training and hands-on experience in Open RAN and edge computing technology.

This collaboration aims to boost the local economy and connect Saudi Arabia to the global landscape of Open RAN and edge computing development and deployment.

Intel’s Sachin Katti, the SVP and general manager of the network and edge group, says: “Together, we aim to accelerate the deployment of edge-native Open RAN solutions in Saudi Arabia and beyond”.

The Open RAN Development Center is set to launch this year.

Aramco Digital serves as the technology division of Aramco, committed to propelling digital transformation and fostering innovation across various industries. Intel designs and builds technologies that power the world’s devices.

Last year, Aramco and Moxa Inc signed an agreement to commercialize their jointly developed Intelligent Integrated Node technology.

The Intelligent Integrated Node, developed by Moxa and invented by Aramco, combines instrumentation control, monitoring, and edge computing capabilities into one integrated solution. It aims to streamline operations by minimizing the need for multiple devices from different manufacturers.
