Broadcom reveals edge portfolio innovations for telcos and enterprises at MWC 2024

Broadcom’s recent acquisition, VMware, has unveiled advancements in its 5G, SD-WAN, SASE, and Edge Compute technologies, collectively forming the software-defined edge portfolio. The company notes that the aim is to assist Communications Service Providers (CSPs) in modernizing their networks and introducing new revenue-generating services.

These developments, achieved through collaboration with industry partners, also offer enterprises the capability to efficiently manage workloads at the edge with automation and enhanced visibility.

Sanjay Uppal, vice president and general manager of Broadcom’s software-defined edge division, expressed the growing interest from CSPs and enterprises in VMware’s software-defined edge solutions.

“In the overlay, we’re introducing a new single-vendor SASE solution with Symantec—helping enterprises connect and better secure the distributed edge. In the telco cloud, we’re enabling CSPs to modernize their core and RAN infrastructure to deliver monetizable services,” Uppal adds.

The software-defined edge, as defined by VMware, encompasses distributed digital infrastructure facilitating workload deployment near endpoints where data is generated or consumed. The infrastructure spans various locations, from office spaces to factory floors, addressing the needs of users and devices. VMware’s approach targets three layers: edge compute stack for hosting applications, intelligent overlay for connectivity and security services, and the underlay network layer for network orchestration across fixed and 5G networks.

One of the notable announcements is the launch of VMware VeloCloud SASE, secured by Symantec, a unified solution combining VMware’s SD-WAN with Symantec’s Security Service Edge capabilities. Available now, the offering aims to cater to existing VeloCloud and Symantec customers. Additionally, VMware reintroduces the VeloCloud brand.

Further collaboration between VMware and Singtel aims to simplify connectivity and cloud infrastructure management through Singtel Paragon, facilitating seamless integration with VMware edge compute stack. The collaboration also includes the establishment of a joint innovation lab to accelerate the development and testing of edge-native applications for commercial adoption.
