VMware Telco cloud platform selected by Antel Uruguay for 5G network development

Uruguay-based mobile operator Antel has selected the VMware Telco cloud platform to build a 5G network with increased operational efficiency and a more comprehensive range of services.

The companies say that telecom companies know the advantages 5G networks can bring to their current services and functions. This has propelled the growth of the 5G ecosystem in South America, prompting communication service providers to adopt existing cloud-native solutions for deploying new network functions.

Antel and VMware, in partnership with local IT firm AT Innovando Juntos, are constructing a 5G network that will meet the increasing needs of both consumer and enterprise customers. Antel is poised to be the first to offer a commercial 5G network in Latin America.

According to the companies, this proof-of-concept use case is a significant step towards the widespread adoption of 5G in South America and may drive further industry advancements.

“To help with the rollout of 5G networks, VMware offers service providers a single platform to modernize their network infrastructure efficiently and cost-effectively,” said Sanjay Uppal, the senior VP and general manager of service provider and edge at VMware. “VMware is proud to be an existing partner of Antel, and we look forward to helping them successfully trial the VMware Telco cloud platform.”

5G emergence has boosted the appeal of a virtualized and containerized telco cloud architecture. CSPs can use software-based techniques to run network functions and services in virtual or containerized environments, resulting in increased flexibility, reliability, scalability and automation of network operations.

The VMware Telco cloud platform implements containerized and virtual network functions simultaneously, allowing for automated operations from the core to the network’s edge.
