EdgeConneX Amsterdam data center earns platinum status for effective waste management

EdgeConneX, a hyperscale data center solutions provider, reached the platinum level of zero waste to landfill operations for its Amsterdam data center (AMS06). Achieving 100% diversion, with 3 percent thermal processing and energy recovery, EdgeConneX says its  dedicated to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Dick Theunissen, the managing director of EMEA, EdgeConneX, says that by attaining operational zero waste, EdgeConneX enhances resource efficiency and promotes organizational sustainability goals.

“The EdgeConneX Amsterdam data center UL 2799 validation sets the standard for future waste reduction and improved waste disposal operations in all EdgeConneX-operated facilities worldwide,” adds Theunissen.

UL’s Environmental Claim Validation Program certifies zero waste to landfill efforts, verifying effective waste diversion annually.

Michael Savarie, the sustainability program manager for the retail and consumer products group at UL Solutions, explains that waste diversion saves resources, safeguards the environment and demonstrates corporate social responsibility.

“It can also help companies obtain economic benefits by reducing production and operating costs and most importantly, helps reduce carbon emissions to achieve carbon neutrality goals,” adds Savarie.

EdgeConneX notes that it prioritizes sustainability through waste minimization and increased recycling rates. Its strategy includes advanced composting and waste recovery-to-energy methods, recycling, reuse, reduction, composting and waste-to-energy incineration to reduce landfill waste.

According to Haley Willis, an environmental and regulatory engineer at EdgeConneX, the company is committed to implementing thorough waste management strategies and understanding the importance of involvement at various levels internally and in cooperation with vendors and customers.

Raj Chudgar, the chief power officer at EdgeConneX, also emphasizes their efforts to simplify recycling and provide educational resources. Enhancing recycling accessibility promotes sustainability goals and transparency, benefiting customers, investors, and communities, he continues.

EdgeConneX additionally achieved validation from the Science Based Targets initiative for its science-based emissions reduction targets. The company received top rankings for efficiency and transparency in the 2023 State of Environmental Impact Report by Structure Research.

Backed by EQT Infrastructure, EdgeConneX offers sustainable global data center solutions tailored to customer needs in location, scale and facility type. The company notes that it is dedicated to constructing and overseeing environmentally sustainable data centers worldwide. They aim to attain carbon, waste and water neutrality by 2030.

Earlier this year, EdgeConneX was officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its greenhouse gas emissions and science-based reduction goals.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) helps businesses set emission reduction goals based on current climate science. Supported by the United Nations Global Compact, WRI, and WWF, SBTi aims to cut emissions by fifty percent in 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
