Wind River acquired by Aptiv for $4.3bn
Wind River, an early pioneer in the embedded computing space, has been snapped up by automotive software specialist Aptiv.
Wind River has had some impressive wins in the 5G virtualization space of late, but hasn’t been as top of mind as other vendors in the wireless and edge computing space. Although Wind River is gaining traction in one of the newest and hottest markets for software, the company is no start-up — it is actually forty years old.
The company’s software is used widely in defense, industrial and automotive systems and its software manages more than two billion devices for 1,700 customers. While Wind River had $400mn revenues in 2021, it is the contracts it has been inking with its cloud-native 5G edge platform that caught Aptiv’s eye and justified the price tag of $4.3bn.
Vodafone and Verizon, for example, both use Wind River’s 5G software. Verizon is using Studio in partnership with Intel and Samsung to operate what the parties say is the first fully virtualized 5G RAN, from the core to the edge. Vodafone meanwhile is using Wind River to build Europe’s first commercial Open RAN. Vodafone was also heavily involved in Verizon’s end-to-end virtualized 5G data session.
