Verizon turns to edge tech to power real-time road safety in V2X rollout

Verizon Business launched the Edge Transportation Exchange, a Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication platform leveraging 5G, LTE, and mobile edge computing for near real-time data sharing between vehicles, infrastructure, and road users.

The platform supports use cases such as vulnerable road user alerts, weather and road condition warnings, and traffic signal information to enhance safety and traffic efficiency. It uses a virtual architecture, reducing the need for costly physical roadside units, making it cost-effective for governments and municipalities.

Key partners include Volkswagen Group of America, Arizona Commerce Authority, Delaware Department of Transportation, and Rutgers University CAIT, each deploying the platform for various safety and connectivity applications.

“Cars are evolving from mechanical vehicles to software-defined mobile devices with the ability to leverage incredible connected technology,” says Shamik Basu, Vice President, Strategic Connectivity & IoT, Verizon Business “Edge Transportation Exchange leverages that technology to give automakers, governments, and tech developers a robust platform for building out the cellular-connected future of transportation — with visibility and reliability for all road users top of mind,” Volkswagen is exploring pedestrian awareness and toll payment applications, while Rutgers is testing school-zone safety and intersection management solutions.

Arizona Commerce Authority is advancing pedestrian detection and work zone notifications, and Delaware is testing red-light and water-on-road warnings.

The platform fosters collaboration between automakers, tech developers, and governments, enabling innovation and scaling of connected transportation solutions. Verizon’s ThingSpace IoT platform supports centralized development, and the solution is positioned as a foundation for the future of connected and automated transportation.
