Edge-powered smart city pilot launches in Belval under €3.1M EU initiative
A new smart city pilot project was revealed last week in Luxembourg at the Maison de l’Innovation in Belval.
The €3.1M EU-backed SmartSpires project aims to transform Luxembourg’s Belval Innovation campus into a smart city living lab, integrating 5G, edge computing, and IoT technologies to enhance urban services.
The initiative is led by a public-private consortium including Gcore, 5SKYE, LIST, and Orange Luxembourg, with support from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
SmartSpires will deploy smart towers equipped with 5G, edge computing, and IoT sensors to enable real-time, low-latency AI-driven applications for urban management.
Four key use cases include mobility services, crowd analytics for public safety, waste management optimization, and a Smart City Living Lab for testing and scaling solutions. The project emphasizes local data processing to reduce latency, optimize energy use, and improve data governance, offering a scalable model for other European cities.
“The launch of SmartSpires is a significant milestone in Luxembourg’s digital transformation journey,” stated Elisabeth Margue, Luxembourg Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister for Media and Connectivity. “This initiative transforms Belval into a living laboratory for the smart cities of the future by integrating cutting-edge 5G connectivity, peripheral computing, and AI. While the project involves testing technologies, its true purpose is more about improving lives, enhancing sustainability, and shaping how cities across Europe can evolve in a more intelligent and responsive way.”
The consortium’s technical expertise includes Gcore’s edge infrastructure, LIST’s research and development, 5SKYE’s smart infrastructure, and Orange Luxembourg’s 5G network.
