Sunlight.io expands in Europe’s tech hub of Crete, invests in female talent

Sunlight.io is increasing investment in Crete, Europe’s ‘Silicon Island’, with plans to grow the Heraklion-based team by 20% by the end of the first half of 2023. This total already includes a doubling of female talent, according to the company.

Dr. George Papamichail, the director of STEP-C, welcomes Sunlight.io’s partnership: “The Science and Technology Park of Crete promotes an ideal environment in which research and business initiatives are jointly designed and undertaken to boost innovation and support startup entrepreneurship. We are delighted to have Sunlight.io on board.”

Sunlight has had a long-standing relationship with the Science and Technology Park of Crete (STEP-C), which it says has contributed to its success in product and development. The two have worked together on R&D projects, as well as Sunlight renting office facilities in the tech park.

“Our presence in Crete and our relationship with STEP-C is not only a part of our history, it’s a part of our future,” says Sunlight founder and CTO Julian Chesterfield. “Since the incubation of our technology at STEP-C, we have participated in research projects and engaged with the STEP-C community — both for recruitment and collaboration purposes.”

Founded in 1993, the STEP-C facility houses tech startups. Located near the General University Hospital of Heraklion, the University of Crete and the Hellenic Mediterranean University, startups at STEP-C have access to laboratories and research infrastructure.

This team investment follows a recent Series A investment round in January, bringing Sunlight’s total funding to 20 million.
