Nissan trials traffic warning technology with Verizon, AWS and edge computing

Communication between vehicles and the environment around them, or C-V2X, as it is known, is one of the most talked-about use cases in autonomous driving, and in edge computing in general. The concept has moved one step closer to reality when Nissan Verizon Edge and AWS completed a C-V2X Proof of Concept in Costa County New Jersey.

The trials tested a variety of situations using cars and pedestrians as well as various sensor configurations to create a multi-viewpoint picture of potential hazards. The technology Nissan is developing will notify drivers of detected pedestrians or warn them of other vehicles emerging from behind visual barriers.

The test used Verizon 5G Edge with AWS Wavelength, and a proprietary telematics test platform developed by Nissan. During the trial, the sensor data from Nissan’s cars was processed locally on Verizon infrastructure and sent back to the vehicles in something close to real-time.

Verizon says that processing data at the edge on its network will take a heavy compute burden off cars. Now that the test is done, the Costa County Transportation Authority will begin validating it for its Automated Driving Systems Grant Program.

Verizon and Nissan’s trials come on the heels of a similar trial undertaken by Telefonica and O2 and MobiledgeX. The Telefonica / O2 trial was different in that it was a multi-cloud affair using MobiledgeX’s orchestration platform, and of course, ensuring consistency across multiple networks is a pressing issue for technologies of this kind.
