MobiledgeX, Telefonica O2 and Deutsche Telekom showcase inter-carrier edge cloud

Edge cloud orchestrator MobiledgeX, along with Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom, recently took part in a GSMA Telco Edge trial demonstrating MobiledgeX’s ability to hook up multiple clouds at the edge.  The trial (video below) showed how edge computing can improve road safety in real time by making road users aware of what is coming round the corner or over the other side of the hill.

Building an edge cloud for this purpose is quite a challenge as car drivers, cyclists and pedestrians will in all likelihood be all on different mobile networks. How can these parties be coordinated safely, the same way the Civic Aviation Authority coordinates fights around the world? Telefonica 02 and  Deutsche Telekom set up a multi-operator cloud using MobiledgeX’s orchestration platform to show how mobile edge cloud can provide road users with early warning of potential collisions.

Two edge cloudlets were deployed using MobiledgeX’s orchestration platform into Telefonica O2’s and Deutsche Telekom’s network data centers in Frankfurt, and Continental’s collision warning application was deployed on both. The two cloudlets were connected to provide optimal latency. Then a cyclist and a car each connected via smartphone to the two different networks approached each other on a blind junction. The location direction of travel and speed of the car and bike were fed back to the Continental application’s backend whose algorithm calculated the probability of a collision and—in this case—emitted a beep to warn of a possible collision as the bike approached the junction.

This isn’t the first MobiledgeX public demonstration. Earlier this year British Telecom and Telefonica ran a multi-operator multi-cloud trial using the platform under the umbrella of the GSMA Telco Edge Cloud. Last year was a relatively quiet time for MobiledgeX, as the company acknowledged it focused on building out real-world examples (and business cases) for coordinated edge computing. MobiledgeX indeed seems to be picking up momentum in 2021, which leaves the question of how fast operators will move to past experiments to deploy new services as the industry looks ahead to 2022.
