New OnLogic edge computer helps integrate legacy systems with Industry 4.0 applications

OnLogic, a manufacturer of industrial edge computing systems, has launched a new edge computing solution with increased connectivity options for easy integration with existing legacy infrastructure. The Helix 511 can be used in challenging manufacturing, automation, and energy management environments needing ruggedized computers and complies with multiple industry standards, according to the company.

Companies using embedded systems may find it challenging to integrate new edge computing platforms with existing legacy systems, OnLogic says. The main reason for this difficulty is the gap between modern and traditional systems.

The Helix 511 edge computers allow companies to link the device to their on-site systems using its four simultaneous serial port connections.

“The embedded computing space has traditionally lagged behind when it comes to adopting new technologies. We want to shift that paradigm while still allowing innovators to access and exchange data with their existing equipment. In many cases, you don’t need to rip and replace everything, you just need a Helix 511,” says Hunter Golden, the product manager at OnLogic.

Users can customize their Helix 511 edge computing system by selecting from various Intel processors, ranging from Celeron to i7 cores. Additionally, the device can accommodate a maximum of 64GB DDR5 memory. Compared to DDR4 memory, DDR5 memory offers improved bandwidth, lower power consumption and reduced latency.

The edge computer solution provides several graphics support options, including UHD and Intel Iris Xe. You can also choose from various operating systems, such as Windows, Ubuntu Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, to develop edge applications that match specific requirements.

OnLogic says it tested the Helix 511 edge computer under challenging conditions, which included electromagnetic compatibility tests for medical compliance, protection from electrostatic discharge and adherence to emission and immunity standards for maritime applications. Further, the company notes that the system has been tested and proven to operate in extreme temperatures ranging from 0 to 50°C.

According to the company, OnLogic also offers an extended support program. Under this program, members receive a 5-year warranty, round–the–clock technical support and additional edge application development services.
