MLGC, Trilogy Networks launch North Dakota’s largest precision agriculture initiative

Telecommunication provider MLGC has partnered with Trilogy Networks to launch North Dakota’s largest precision agriculture deployment. Called the Dakota*ICP (Innovative Crop Production), the project will bring together telecommunications technology and AI-powered cloud infrastructure to transform farming practices throughout the state.

“This is the world’s largest deployment of precision agricultural infrastructure to enable data-driven farming,” says George Woodward, the president and CEO of Trilogy Networks. “North Dakota delivers the perfect combination of innovation, scale, and some of the richest farmland in the world.

The project is built on MLGC’s advanced telecommunications network and FarmGrid, Trilogy Networks’ precision agricultural platform. FarmGrid provides AI-driven aerial imagery processing, soil analytics, microclimate monitoring and automation capabilities.

This deployment aims to provide time-sensitive actionable information to the 2.1 million growers in the US, increase yields, reduce costs, improve profitability and lower environmental impacts.

Tyler Kilde, president and CEO at MLGC, says, “We’re moving beyond last mile connectivity to providing last acre coverage to every farm we serve. Connected by our 10-gigabit network, Trilogy’s FarmGrid precision agriculture infrastructure and data-driven farming practices will deliver unimaginable gains to farmers in North Dakota and serve as an example for farmers around the world.”

The companies assert that this is an essential step in the fight to prevent a global food shortage. The Agriculture Act of 2018 recognizes the forecast that global food shortages could reach 50% by 2050 due to climate events and the Russian-Ukrainian war. To help prevent this turn of events, technological solutions must be implemented by 2030.

Trilogy Networks also announced it will open its Center for Agricultural Innovation in Fargo, North Dakota. This center will focus on deploying and adopting data-driven farming practices in the Red River Valley and throughout the state. Trilogy hopes that its FarmGrid precision ag infrastructure will provide business intelligence and supply chain visibility to stakeholders in the US agri-food industry.

Earlier this year, Trilogy Networks and Veea joined forces with Microclimates to introduce a new solution for precision agriculture. The platform includes Microclimates’ universal control system which monitors environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, CO2, watering and ambient light in order to provide 24/7 monitoring and alerts for more efficient data collection, computation, and transport.
