EdgeCortix raises $20 million for technology development and global expansion

EdgeCortix, a company specializing in edge artificial intelligence solutions, has concluded an additional funding round, securing a total of $20 million. This investment will support the company’s expansion and technological advancements.

EdgeCortix’s primary goal for the fund is to advance and develop the Sakura hardware, a semiconductor device designed for edge artificial intelligence applications. Beyond this, the company has plans to expand its engineering capabilities in Japan and establish a new development center in India.

The funding round was led by SBI Investment Co. Ltd. and Global Hands-on VC, with participation from new and existing investors, namely Cycle Group and Monozukuri Ventures. Renesas Electronics Corporation also invested in EdgeCortix, signifying its commitment to continue its strategic collaboration in the AI and machine learning domain.

“We are thrilled that multiple leading VC firms and strategic partners have recognized the value we bring to this fast-moving, fast-growing market. We are pleased to welcome SBI Investment, GHOVC, and Renesas to the EdgeCortix family. We are eager to continue to scale our business with a focus on enabling low-power AI across the edge ecosystem,” says Dr. Sakyasingha Dasgupta, CEO and founder of EdgeCortix.

The Sakura-I chip has been employed in a range of edge AI applications. In a recent development, BittWare, a manufacturer specializing in embedded hardware, has chosen to incorporate the Sakura-I chip into its AI inference-optimized ASIC-based acceleration solution.

EdgeCortix also announced the expansion of its leadership team with the appointment of Sudhakar Kale as the vice president of Silicon Engineering and the head of a new design center in India.

“I’m thrilled now to be able to bring my years of technical and managerial experience to the table to further accelerate our design and performance capabilities as we deliver the next generation of industry-leading edge AI computing solutions,” says Sudhakar Kale.

The company says Kale brings over three decades of experience in the semiconductor industry, with several prominent leadership positions with Samsung, AMD, Intel, Texas Instruments, Synopsys, and Blaize.
