Coherent, TriEye unveil cost-effective imaging system for robotics, auto markets

Coherent Corporation, a semiconductor laser manufacturer, and TriEye Limited, a company known for its shortwave infrared sensing technology, have unveiled plans to enhance the visual capabilities of automotive and robotics systems.

The two companies are collaborating to create an advanced shortwave infrared (SWIR) imaging system using cost-effective large-scale manufacturing. In the companies’ joint effort, Coherent Corporation and TriEye Limited integrated TriEye’s spectrum-enhanced detection and ranging (SEDAR) product platform with Coherent’s SWIR semiconductor laser in the imaging system.

Coherent says there is a growing need for SWIR imaging systems in vision-sensing applications that capture images under challenging scenarios. These conditions include rain, fog and changing light conditions. The company claims that its solution can provide autonomous robots with the ability to function 24×7 in any lighting conditions, thanks to its efficient operation in extreme environments.

“Both technologies are produced leveraging high-volume manufacturing platforms that will enable them to achieve the economies of scale required to penetrate markets in automotive and robotics,” says Dr. Sanjai Parthasarathi, the chief marketing officer at Coherent Corporation.

The solution uses TriEye’s CMOS-based SWIR sensor and illumination source with Coherent’s 1375 nm edge-emitting laser. The integration uses surface mount technology and ensures extended vision capabilities for the camera system by combining shortwave infrared imaging and laser illuminating technologies.

“Our collaboration will allow us to continue revolutionizing sensing capabilities and machine vision by allowing the incorporation of SWIR technology into a greater number of emerging applications,” says Avi Bakal, CEO and co-founder of TriEye.

The Coherent and TriEye imaging system was demonstrated at Munich, Germany’s Laser World of Photonics event. At the event, Coherent also showcased its portfolio of patented solutions for high-performance applications for laser processing in industrial, e-mobility, electronics, and other markets.
