Verizon goes live with 5G-enabled Azure Edge Stack, cites customer win
Verizon has gone live with its product that combines Verizon 5G Edge and Microsoft’s Azure Edge Stack to create a private 5G package for enterprise. The two announced they were working on a joint offering late last year and it is now in general availability.
The idea is to integrate Verizon’s on-site 5G Edge network with Azure edge services, enabling ultra-low latency/high-performance local compute resources. That will help businesses tap into real-time data analysis and delivery at manufacturing plants or in hospitals or retail environments.
The two already have a customer: Ice Mobility, which is a logistics company using Verizon 5G Edge with Azure to help with computer vision-assisted product packing. By gathering data in near real-time on product packing errors, Ice Mobility said it has the potential to improve on-site quality assurance and save 15% to 30% in processing time. It is also looking at using its 5G edge to help it with automation improvements such as costing in real-time.

Verizon also partners with AWS at the edge and in some ways that partnership is more advanced. Verizon is embedding AWS compute nodes into its network in tandem with Verizon 5G Edge and it recently announced the service is available in no less than 13 locations. There will be many enterprises that will have chosen either Azure and Microsoft as their hyperscaler of choice, so it makes sense for Verizon to offer private 5G services using the edge stacks from both in the early stages of edge cloud services.
