Vapor IO, Comcast to pilot last mile edge services in Chicago and Atlanta

Vapor IO and Comcast have announced a pilot program to enable third-party edge service providers to host data and applications in local Comcast markets. The companies will kick off initial projects in Chicago and Atlanta with the goal of demonstrating product readiness for nationwide scaling.

“Our combined solution unlocks the economics of edge computing,” says Cole Crawford, the founder and CEO of Vapor IO.

The companies say the partnership between Vapor IO’s Kinetic Grid platform and Comcast’s network infrastructure enables faster response times, lower latency, favorable economics and better user experiences.

“Integrating Vapor IO’s Kinetic Grid with Comcast’s nationwide 10G network gives third parties the ability to run edge applications cost-effectively, at scale and with better performance,” continues Crawford.

Elad Nafshi, the chief network officer of Comcast, says that the proximity of their network facilities to businesses nationwide provides an exciting chance to collaborate with Vapor IO. This partnership will help enable new edge services that benefit from the high bandwidth and low latency capabilities.

The companies say the XaaS (anything as a service) approach can revolutionize enterprise business models by reducing the need for substantial capital investments in on-premises infrastructure.

Comcast and Vapor IO plan to offer services such as computer vision, video security, private 5G, edge cloud and industry-specific applications like smart cities or factories. The initial pilot program is expected to launch in Q3 2023 in Chicago and Atlanta.

Early this year, Vapor IO partnered with Cellnex Telecom to expand the Kinetic Grid platform in Europe by placing low-latency workloads in Vapor IO facilities at the edge of wireline and wireless access networks. Vapor IO and Cellnex will collaborate to deploy edge nodes in European locations.
