Utilities sector to invest $2B in private 5G/4G by 2026, SNS Telecom & IT report says

According to a report by SNS Telecom & IT, spending on private 5G/4G cellular networks in the utilities sector is projected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15% over the next three years. Infrastructure spending is expected to reach approximately $2 billion between 2023 and 2026.

The report notes that private 5G/4G cellular networks, also referred to as Non-Public Networks (NPNs), are gaining popularity in industries like utilities. These networks facilitate smart grid communications and provide localized wireless connectivity to infrastructure facilities such as power plants, substations and offshore wind farms.

Adopting private cellular networks in the utilities sector has expedited the deployment of communication infrastructure, SNS Telecom & IT says. American utility companies, including Ameren, Evergy, Hawaiian Electric, LCRA, SCE, SDG&E, Southern Company and Xcel Energy, are actively implementing private wireless networks to support grid modernization. In addition to these efforts, 450connect, a German-based company, is also rolling out a nationwide LTE network to facilitate the digitization of energy and water utilities.

SNS Telecom & IT says its research package, “Private 5G/4G Cellular Networks for Utilities: 2023 – 2030,” provides market analysis and forecasts for private 5G and LTE networks across 15 vertical industries.

Part of SNS Worldwide group, SNS Telecom & IT is a market intelligence and consulting firm specializing in telecommunications and information technology. The firm offers insights into established and emerging technologies, including 5G, LTE, Open RAN, private cellular networks, IoT, critical communications, big data, smart cities, smart homes, consumer electronics and wearables.

SNS Telecom & IT also recently predicted that investments in LTE and 5G NR infrastructure based on CBRS RAN, mobile core and transport networks are expected to reach $900 million by the end of 2023, with a projected growth rate of approximately 20 percent from 2023 to 2026.

The CBRS spectrum is being used for various applications, such as improving mobile network capacity and coverage, providing broadband internet access in rural areas, supporting MVNOs, enhancing indoor coverage and enabling private cellular networks for IIoT and enterprise connectivity.
