Turbidite and AsiaSat partner on real-time edge solutions for Asia Pacific

Asia’s newest edge data center provider Turbidite entered a new partnership with Asia Satellite Telecommunications (AsiaSat) that will focus on delivering cloud and hosting solutions across the region.

As part of the new collaboration, AsiaSat’s existing satellite and ground infrastructure will become compatible with Turbidite’s edge data center platform.

“We are delighted to enter into this partnership with AsiaSat as we broaden our edge data center solutions to support new mandates by the growing number of [Over-the-top (OTT) services] and media companies as they continue to drive up digital traffic,” explained Turbidite CEO Bill Barney.

The move will now provide companies with hosting services alongside satellite and ground-based connectivity from AsiaSat’s Tai Po earth station, in order to support the industry’s accelerated demand for digital services.

“Together with AsiaSat, we are able to further empower these customers to transform into digital ready organizations with secure access, flexible transport/bandwidth options, and real-time deployment.”

For context, Turbidite launched its pan-Asian edge data center platform in March 2021, with the goal of developing a wide network of edge data centers across multiple Asia Pacific countries.

Founded by former CEO of Global Cloud Xchange Bill Barney, Turbidite is headquartered in Hong Kong and backed by New World Development Company Limited.

“Turbidite’s extensive expertise in the data center and network infrastructure deployment and management will truly complement our current satellite and ground-based solution portfolios,” said AsiaSat CEO Roger Tong.

“We look forward to working with Turbidite to further develop and enhance our infrastructure to meet the flexibility and diversity required by our customers.”

The partnership between Turbidite and AsiaSat is particularly relevant for edge ecosystems around the world when considering that the Asia-Pacific region accounted for half of the US$54 billion global data center colocation market in 2020, according to Jabez Tan, head of research for Structure Research.

In terms of main actors in the industry, the APAC market was led by Equinix, Digital Realty, China Telecom, NTT Global Data Centres, and China Unicom.
