Telco Systems, Nexcom announce 5G-ready uCPE for edge workloads

A collaboration between Telco Systems and Nexcom has resulted in the availability of edge appliances to help medium and small enterprises build a secure system that can run virtual workloads at the network edge.

Nexcom is offering an Intel-based 5G-ready desktop Universal Customer Premises Equipment (uCPE) shipped pre-installed with Telco Systems’ Edgility smart edge computing software. Nexcom’s DTA 1164W uCPE is designed to support 5G and IoT connectivity that can aid applications from a wide range of cloud-native deployments while providing flexible configuration.

“As small and medium-sized businesses move business services to the edge as part of their digital transformation initiatives, their IT teams must adapt on the fly to enable fast deployment of new virtual workloads. Our joint offering with Nexcom offers businesses an agile, cost-efficient solution to simplify the deployment and management of edge devices while reducing operational costs,” said Ariel Efrati, CEO of Telco Systems.

As industries are shifting towards processing data at the edge, IT teams are demanding efficient systems that can help in deploying and running services and applications at the network edge. Integrated hardware and software platforms help in solving the complex architecture, improving security and providing maintenance for these edge devices.

“Based on our successful long-term partnership with Telco Systems, we are onboarding their edge compute software onto our 5G uCPE,” said Allan Chiu, VP of network and communication solutions at Nexcom. “This market-ready solution with pre-installed software suits those of our customers who are seeking an easy-to-deploy product for automating edge device management for SD-WAN networks.”

At the heart of Nexcom’s DTA 1164W uCPE is Intel’s Atom C3000R processor series SoC that supports up to 16GB of memory. The hardware platform is equipped with two ports for PoE that can power up to 30W via 802.11at and an additional interface for external SSD storage. For improved wireless connectivity, the device has internal sockets for 4G LTE and 5G connections.

On the software side, Telco Systems’ Edgility has two components: Edgility OS, a high performance, low-footprint NFVi operating system that turns any Intel architecture into an operational Far Edge Device; and Edgility Central, which is a cloud-based Management and Orchestration (MANO) system. Leveraging the Zero Touch Provisioning  (ZTP), the software platform can auto-deploy applications. For uCPE edge appliances, the operating system also supports virtual machines and containers enabling customers to add any container-based applications.
