Sygic, IT4Innovations collaborates to develop a smart city traffic computation platform

Sygic, a company specializing in offline mobile GPS navigation, has joined forces with IT4Innovations, a R&D center that provided an accelerated traffic-simulator module. Together, they have created a smart city traffic computation platform.

The platform collects and analyzes real-time traffic data, allowing drivers to be guided on the most optimized route to their destination. Where consumer applications such as Waze optimize travel based on time, the Sygic solution will enable city-wide traffic planning that can include optimization for carbon emissions, for example.

By utilizing historical traffic data from floating car data and road sensors, the platform offers valuable traffic views and predictions. Moreover, the smart city traffic computation platform integrates with the car navigation system, enabling efficient traffic orchestration. The demonstration of the solution took place at the ITS Congress in Lisbon, which occurred between May 22 to May 24, 2023.

“Each city can now have its own navigation system optimizing drivers’ commutes according to unique city policies for emission and RCI zones. Cities can also make informed decisions by way of what-if analyses for road, bridge, or tunnel closures or restrictions and when planning new road infrastructure development,” says Radim Cmar, solution architect from Sygic.

Sygic highlights a range of challenges encountered by cities with populations of over one million people, particularly regarding traffic congestion resulting from vehicles on the roads and ongoing infrastructure maintenance projects. To tackle these issues, the smart city traffic computation platform aims to offer real-time traffic analysis and support drivers in achieving well-distributed road loads while minimizing emissions and prioritizing safety.

Sygic’s smart mobility platform has a modular architecture, allowing for the customization and adaptation of individual modules to cater to various traffic management schemes implemented in different cities. Through a central traffic control mechanism, the platform establishes direct communication with car navigation devices, effectively orchestrating traffic to enhance overall flow.

To accomplish this, the central system utilizes automatic calculations to assess the current load on transport infrastructure and provides prediction up to 30 minutes ahead. In short, this advanced traffic management system has the capability to predict the future and calculate optimal routes for drivers, thus helping them avoid traffic congestion.
