Stackpath names new CTO as executive team for edge service provider continues to evolve
StackPath, a provider of CDN and edge-computing services, announced that it has appointed William Charnock as chief technology officer (CTO). The company said Charnock will oversee the overall technology framework for StackPath and lead the company’s efforts to innovate and scale its architecture as StackPath continues to expand its globally distributed platform.
Charnock has over 20 years of experience in engineering and technology, many of them with CDN and edge computing companies. Most recently, Charnock was serving as the senior director of network strategy for Fastly where he oversaw global network growth and strategy. He helped create a cloud-networking platform as co-founder and CEO of PacketFabric. Prior to that, he was VP of network engineering and architecture for Limelight Networks.
“We are thrilled to welcome Will to our executive leadership team as we continue investing heavily in providing a full-complement of edge computing and edge applications,” said Kip Turco, StackPath CEO said in a press release. “Will is well known for his technical engineering and operations leadership. His success building high-scale infrastructures and networks will be paramount as we further stake our leadership position at the edge,” he said.
“I’m excited to join StackPath and the team that is defining and building the next generation of edge computing technology,” said Charnock. “A lot of operators are talking about edge computing, but StackPath is leading the way and I have been empowered to enforce the technical changes necessary to take us to the next level.”
Charnock is based in Texas, where StackPath is headquartered and will report to the CEO.
Charnock’s hire is the latest in a series of moves in the executive suite at StackPath this year.
Charnock fills the position left by Wen Temitim, who served as CTO from 2017 until June 2020 when he joined Juniper as VP of technology and edge architectures for Juniper Networks.
Founder and CEO Lance Crosby stepped aside in March and is now listed as Chief Innovation Officer. Chief product officer Ben Gabler and chief revenue officer Steven Canale also departed the team at that time. The timing of the departures was noteworthy because the company secured a $216M round of funding that month.
Christopher (Kip) Turco, a partner with key investor Abry Partners and a director on StackPath’s board, has been acting as CEO since January. Justin Grindstaff moved into the CRO role in March in another unannounced move.
