Solace, MobiledgeX get on the message bus for 5G and edge computing

Two players in edge software are partnering to create personalized, 5G mobility safety and convenience services for use in vehicles. On the one side is MobiledgeX, which has created a marketplace of edge resources and services. Solace, meanwhile, offers an event messaging platform. Together, the companies aim to bring new safety and infotainment services to mobility companies.

Solace is contributing its PubSub+ event streaming and management platform, which the company says is used by automakers Groupe Renault and Group PSA to stream events across their enterprises. PubSub’s role will be to route safety data including alerts and customized content to vehicles.

For its part, MobiledgeX uses 5G connectivity to create reliable, real-time connections between vehicles, mobile devices, and transportation infrastructure. Its product places and executes workloads to keep vehicles connected to edge-based services, both for safety and for entertainment and information content.

Edge computing and 5G are commonly associated with autonomous vehicles because of the requirement for immediate control over vehicles in emergencies, for instance, but support for other mobility services is expected to grow significantly over the next decade. According to a forecast from the State of the Edge 2020 report, infotainment services will account for almost 11% of the global edge IT power footprint by 2028 out of a total forecast of 3405MW consumed by automotive sector edge deployments. Autonomous vehicles will account for 33% of power requirements, for comparison.

MobiledgeX Inc. and Solace Corp. are pushing their integrated efforts as a three-fold benefit to automakers and drivers.

The first benefit of an integrated offering is an increase in system predictability, moving critical data from end to end with less than 10 milliseconds of latency and business-service latency of fewer than 50 milliseconds.

Seamless interconnectivity is second, according to a release from Solace. The pair claim that they can connect all transportation modes across fleets, carriers, geographic borders, and government agencies.

The third is their shared security model. They are offering security across a multi-operator, global network.
