Schneider Electric works on cooling edge infrastructure

Schneider Electric has debuted the Uniflair cooling system, its first rack-mounted data center cooling hardware. The new cooling systems are intended to help customers keep edge computing workloads running smoothly by working in conjunction with the firm’s software and hardware for connecting and managing IoT systems.

The issue of cooling edge computing systems will come to the fore as companies move more workloads to the edge. The global power footprint of edge IT and data center facilities is expected to reach 102000 megawatts by 2028, according to a forecast in the State of the Edge report. Companies like Schneider can expect to see around $700 billion in global infrastructure investment over the next decade as companies build out edge computing capabilities, according to the report.

The compact Uniflair rack-mounted 3.5kW cooling system is designed for edge environments and micro data centers. It fits at the bottom of a rack that the system cools and can be integrated into Schneider’s EcoStruxure so that it can be overseen by the firm’s data center management software. EcoStruxure is Schneider’s name for a portfolio of products that are part of an open, interoperable and IoT-enabled architecture and platform.

The system’s variable capacity promises continuous and automatic modulation of fan and compressor speed to match rack airflow requirements in order to deliver 0.5kW to 3.5kW of cooling to maximize efficiency and lowering operational cost.

EcoStruxure is an open, interoperable and IoT-enabled architecture and platform that promises enhanced safety, reliability, efficiency, sustainability, and connectivity. It leverages advancements in IoT, mobility, sensing, cloud, analytics, and cybersecurity. EcoStruxure has been deployed in almost 500,000 sites and Schneider says there are 2 million assets under management.
