Rancher Labs’ top end grows to 2,000 Kubernetes clusters

It is all (or at least mostly) about scaling up with Rancher 2.4, which has been released by Rancher Labs Inc. The company said its updated heterogeneous multi-cluster, multi-cloud Kubernetes management platform supports 2,000 clusters and 100,000 nodes.

That is going to be good news for the increasing number of outfits – telecommunications companies, large manufacturers, energy producers, and others – that need more edge capacity in more locations.

In fact, Rancher Labs executives in their announcement about release 2.4 say they will support one million clusters “in an upcoming release.”

A short analysis of the firm’s product update by StorageReview notes that that stratospheric boost in capability might be more than one release in the future. The author surmises that if one million clusters were around the corner, version 2.4 would have a beefier top end.

Hedging their bets, Rancher executives have also debuted a hosting service for companies not yet ready for a life that far on the edge. For those less inclined to undertake the management of thousands of nodes of hardware, Rancher’s platform as a service can manage Kubernetes clusters on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Corp. Azure, Google Cloud, and DigitalOcean Inc. Droplets.

Version 2.4 improves maintenance workflows, with support for lightweight Kubernetes getting some important updates.

Lightweight K3s distributions operating under the updated platform manage remote software upgrades and patches using local resources. That model is operationally solid enough to negate a connection to a management server until after an upgrade when clusters can then sync with the server.

K3s is a certified Kubernetes distribution designed to work in Internet-of-Things devices as small as a Raspberry Pi as well as in unattended and resource-constrained remote locations.
