Qwilt, Telefónica join forces to enhance content delivery network in Spain

Qwilt and Telefónica have agreed to implement a content delivery system for third parties in Spain, combining their respective technologies.

According to the companies, the partnership will increase Qwilt’s coverage and delivery capacity in Spain via Telefonica’s Content Distribution Network (TCDN). The aim is to create an efficient content delivery network.

“Internet traffic is increasing rapidly, and content providers need delivery services that are increasingly efficient in light of the competition we are witnessing for Internet bandwidth,” says Francisco Javier Pascual, the director of product marketing at Telefónica. “With this agreement, Telefónica’s TCDN and Qwilt’s delivery capacity are strengthened.”

Telefónica and Qwilt have integrated their respective CDNs by leveraging open APIs and content exchange Telefónica’s. The companies say that third-party content delivery will improve by integrating Qwilt’s global server deployment with TCDN’s physical proximity to Telefonica customers.

Further, Telefónica and Qwilt’s partnership is based on commercial Open Caching standards facilitated by the Streaming Video Technology Alliance (SVTA). The SVTA is a non-profit technical organization that brings together businesses in the streaming video industry to develop ways of improving interoperability.

“As one of Spain’s leading service providers, Telefónica is a fantastic addition to our global network and allows us to further develop our content delivery service offering,” says Alon Maor, the CEO of Qwilt.

Last fall, Qwilt, Cisco and Vodafone teamed up to build a new edge delivery network for 25 million subscribers in Turkey. As a result of the collaboration, Vodafone’s streaming, VOD and media applications improved in quality and delivery speed.
