Qualcomm SoC to be used for Volkswagen’s automated driving software

Cariad says selecting its own high-performance computer chips for its platform and match them with its own software requirements is the company’s first decision of its kind and will lay the groundwork for future developments. The Qualcomm SoCs will help the demand for secure and scalable automated driving functions, and also more broadly, the “New Auto” strategy laid out by Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess, who laid out a blueprint for an autonomous industry.

Klaus Hofmockel, senior vice president of hardware development at Cariad, says Qualcomm’s SoC lineup was chosen because of its efficient compute performance in combination with energy efficiency and also cost-effectiveness to meet its requirements for balance between scalability, costs, and performance.

Nakul Duggal, senior vice president and general manager of automotive at Qualcomm, says, “We look forward to supporting Cariad and its suppliers to deliver scalable and secure automated driving functions for Volkswagen Group vehicles through their selection of our open and programmable Snapdragon Ride Platforms. As the amount of innovation and complexities increase, strong collaborations such as ours with Cariad are a necessity to not only address aggressive time-to-market goals, but to deliver safe and reliable automated driving experiences for all.”

Other car makers have been lining up with Nvidia to use GPUs in their autonomous vehicle platforms; Mercedes announced a partnership with the chip maker in 2020. Among other recent moves made in autonomous driving SoC, Ambarella unveiled its CV3 AI domain controller family during CES 2022 in January.
