Qualcomm acquires Arduino in bid to dominate edge and embedded AI

Qualcomm announced its acquisition of open-source hardware and software provider Arduino earlier this month.

Arduino will continue to develop independent systems in the spirit of the open source community while gaining access to Qualcomm’s edge technology and worldwide reach.

A new product called Arduino UNO Q uses a dual-brain architecture to do HPC and real-time control for AI-based apps, powered by Qualcomm Dragonwing processors.Arduino App Lab is a new cross-platform integrated development environment bringing the simplicity of Arduino to Real-time OS, Linux and Python-based devices supporting AI.

“Joining forces with Qualcomm Technologies allows us to supercharge our commitment to accessibility and innovation,” says Fabio Violante, CEO, Arduino. “The launch of UNO Q is just the beginning, we’re excited to empower our global community with powerful tools that make AI development intuitive, scalable, and open to everyone.”

The acquisition aligns with Qualcomm’s larger thrust around investing in a full stack edge platform having previously integrated Edge Impulse and Foundries.io.

Qualcomm and Arduino want to bring computing tools and AI to all developers, learners, and businesses around the world. The collaboration focuses on innovation, affordability and community with a focus on advancing AI development and global commercialization opportunities.
