Proximity Data Centres gets closer to expansion goals with latest data center acquisition
Proximity Data Centres Limited, a UK-based regional provider of edge data center services, has acquired another data center for its growing portfolio.
Proximity Data Centres acquired a 63k square foot data center in Birmingham which is roughly midway between London and Manchester in central England. There is space immediately available in the facility, which has the capacity for up to 2000 racks in three data halls. The current IT load is 6MW and can be doubled to 12MW.
As with the recent acquisition in Swindon, Birmingham gives Proximity immediately available capacity and expansion headroom in a key urban area (at 1.2m, its population is more than double that in Manchester). Proximity notes the Birmingham location is close to the new HS2 railway station and the BBC campus, as well as all major national and various regional fiber providers. Management expects this will make it attractive to hyperscalers, CDNs and gaming providers.
Proximity has been building facilities since 2020, particularly in the North West of the country. Birmingham is Proximity’s eighth data center in the UK. Executives said the company will have 20 built or acquired by 2023.
