OSS, TMGcore debut a liquid-immersion cooled transportable supercomputer featuring Nvidia GPUs

One Stop Systems (OSS), a provider of high-performance edge computing systems, has worked with TMGcore to create a new two-phase liquid immersion-cooled version of the OSS Rigel Edge Supercomputer. Designed specifically for AI Transportable applications, the companies say this supercomputer is efficient, compact, rugged and performant.

“We wanted to work with OSS because they lead the market in high-performance rugged computer solutions for AI at the edge,” stated Seamus Egan, vice president of TMGcore’s Government Integrated Solutions. “Just like our patented immersion cooling technology solutions, Rigel’s powerful features are not available anywhere else. Bringing these two technologies together demonstrates the potential for a unique, compact, high-performance solution for the transportable edge.”

TMGcore’s immersion-cooled technology solutions use fluids that are nonconductive and chemically inert. These liquids have similar properties to water and can fully immerse products like Rigel, where the liquid’s boiling point efficiently removes the electronic heat. The lack of heat sinks allows for very compact, rugged platforms, providing high performance in small form factors, which is crucial for AI Transportables.

The new two-phase immersion-cooled Rigel features Nvidia GPUs and is designed for autonomous vehicles, edge computing, and robotic process automation applications. According to the companies, two-phase immersion cooling is significantly more thermally efficient than traditional air-conduction cooling.

The technology used in the Rigel makes it more rugged, as the fluid provides shock and vibration-dampening effects. Because there are no fans or heatsinks, the overall system size, power consumption, and noise level is significantly reduced.

“Rigel, along with the Nvidia HGX A100 4GPU solution, represents a leap forward in advancing design, power, and cooling of supercomputers for rugged edge environments,” stated Paresh Kharya, the senior director of product management for accelerated computing at Nvidia. “The highly compact form factor for the powerful Nvidia HGX A100, in combination with the OSS leading-edge design using the two-phase immersion technology from TMGcore, provides a roadmap for even more dense and rugged designs.”

OSS plans to introduce various liquid-cooled versions of Rigel two-phase immersion beginning in the first quarter of 2023.

OSS was in the news last month for partnering with Embark, a provider of autonomous trucking solutions, to provide a ruggedized compute solution for Embark’s commercial autonomous truck deployment.
