Nokia offers 5G IoT networks as a service
Nokia Corp. said it is expanding its slate of managed services, making it possible for customers to offer 5G, IoT and edge capabilities with a minimum capital expenditure.
Nokia is expanding its worldwide IoT network grid managed service to make the most of 5G and edge trends. Specifically, according to company executives, buyers of the managed service will get 5G IoT functions without having to build a global infrastructure.
The company is enticing would-be customers with a pay-as-you-go model for scaling 5G IoT upgrades when and as fast as they need it. Their customers, in turn, are looking for lower latency, better security and other features that 5g IoT would bring.
Nokia now has a lab in Dallas that telecommunications firms can connect to for tests of potential services.
Nokia’s network grid enables the separation of user-plane functions and their extension to the far network edge or to information-technology data centers on company campuses. The grid can also be upgraded with multi-access edge computing technology, which helps support heavy services like cellular vehicle-to-everything roles.
The move comes at a time when many industries are suddenly dealing with steep revenue declines. Increasing productivity as rapidly as possible with the smallest conceivable outlay will be more appealing than speculative investments in new 5G systems and applications.

The features and performance of 5G can help digitally transform industries like transportation, healthcare, and manufacturing over the next several years and CSPs are eager to establish new value chain positions in these markets. We expect such managed services that demonstrate success in accelerating the ‘time-to-value’ or de-risking 5G investment for both enterprises and CSPs will generate strong demand.”
