Nokia and Verizon power private 5G rollout at UK Freeport

Nokia and Verizon Business are partnering to deploy private 5G networks across Thames Freeport, a major UK logistics and manufacturing hub along the River Thames in London.

The initiative aims to enhance port operations using AI, autonomous vehicles, real-time logistics, and advanced data analytics. Thames Freeport, a UK Free Trade Zone, seeks to boost economic growth, create jobs, and attract global investment.

The project will support innovation, job training, and reskilling, with plans to create 5,000 jobs by 2030.

Nokia will provide hardware and software, including its Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) platform and MX Industrial Edge (MXIE).

“Our partnership with Thames Freeport and Nokia shows the full promise of private 5G at scale,” says Jennifer Artley, SVP, 5G Acceleration, Verizon Business. “Thames Freeport is developing one of the most technologically advanced commercial corridors in Europe to enable forward innovation and economic revitalization for an entire community. We’re not just driving operational improvements to help a partner stay ahead of the curve; we’re laying the groundwork for new revenue streams, community development, and further commercial and technological investment.”

Key deployment sites include DP World London Gateway, Port of Tilbury, and Ford Dagenham, supporting logistics, manufacturing, and sustainability. The private 5G networks will enable IoT, predictive maintenance, environmental monitoring, and process automation.

This collaboration represents one of the largest private 5G rollouts in Europe, driving technological and economic transformation in the region.
