NJ Transit Innovation Team wins IDC Best in Future of Digital Innovation awards

The NJ Transit Innovation Team has been named the overall winner of the second annual IDC Best in Future of Digital Innovation Awards. This award recognizes organizations transforming from digital technology consumers to large-scale digital innovators.

NJ Transit’s Innovation Train project aims to overhaul outdated technologies used in the transit industry. It connects all NJ Transit assets (stations, vehicles, track) to provide situational awareness, command, control, financial, and communications operations.

The new technology offers:

  • A private network that links NJT assets.
  • The network includes a 10G/s backbone that gives internet access to the mesh.
  • Edge computing for video analytics and uploads.
  • Station and onboard Wi-Fi; data analytics for passengers.
  • UWB-based wayfinding.
  • An IoT-based escalator/elevator monitoring.

As a result of the project, the time to offload video from vehicles dropped from 48 hours to 10 minutes, which increased video storage length by 333%. NJ Transit expects to see claims savings of up to $5 million annually due to this project.

“Winners in our annual Best in Future of Digital Innovation Awards represent those modern organizations that have successfully transformed from digital technology consumers to large-scale digital innovators,” said Nancy Gohring, research director, Future of Digital Innovation at IDC.

The Future of Digital Innovation Awards program recognizes organizations that have transformed their business by leveraging digital technologies. They select winners based on their ability to demonstrate business value creation through digital innovation. IDC’s Future of X research practices helps organizations generate the sustainable momentum necessary for the continued development of innovative digital products and services.

Edge innovation winner builds solution for contracting

PCL Contractors Inc. won in the Edge Innovation Category for its Job Site Access (JSA) platform. The Job Site Access (JSA) platform from PCL Constructors Inc. is a cloud-based access control and tracking solution designed specifically for construction job sites. JSA is scalable to meet the needs of projects of varying sizes and provides flexible options for authentication, monitoring and hardware integration based on specific requirements. The JSA solution allows field operations teams to connect and track workers via the JSA Site Mobile app for iOS or Android devices. Job Site Access aims to improve job site security by restricting unauthorized access, reducing opportunities for theft, and tracking time on site.

“We are thrilled to shine a spotlight on the organizations operating as digital innovation factories, building differentiating products and services to create greater value for customers and the business,” added Gohring.
