NEC, Stratus extend partnership, advance fault-tolerant edge computing design

The two firms worked together on creating and delivering the Stratus ftServer, a fully integrated, continuously available computing platform, as well as the NEC Express5800 Enterprise Server for large-scale database workloads and virtualization.

Businesses need more efficient and secure methods to combine software applications onto single, fault-tolerant platforms that run those applications continuously without data loss due to planned or unplanned downtimes as demands for digital operations grow. Stratus expects the next generation of its fault-tolerant technology to provide even more reliable computing capabilities, with greater serviceability, functionality, and performance.

NEC’s executive vice president Kazunori Sudo commented on the partnership: “Our long-standing relationship with Stratus has resulted in valuable fault-tolerant servers that our customers and partners rely on to keep their businesses up and running. “Our continued partnership will bring further support to customers’ value creation that benefits the digitalization of our societies.”

Stratus‘ chairman, president and CEO Dave Laurello, also spoke about the continued partnership.

“Stratus and NEC have a common history of success in helping customers simplify, protect, and automate their digitally transforming operations. Our roadmap brings together the best technology to further reduce the complexity and risk of the computing infrastructures that will be needed in the future, whether in a data center or an edge environment,” he said.

Stratus Technologies was recently in the news for winning several honors for its products in the field.

Rockwell Automation recognized Stratus as the inaugural Partner Network Ecosystem Award winner for inclusion in Horizon Solutions’ Business Intelligence in a Box solution. Rubberlite and Syntomer, Stratus edge computing customers, won separate honors in the Manufacturing Leadership Awards 2022 for digital transformation leadership and operational excellence. The ztC Edge software and ftServer earned an honorable mention in the Control Engineering 2022 Engineers’ Choice Awards.

Analysis

This extended partnership between NEC and Stratus is a good move for both companies. NEC can continue to supply systems to customers who typically place hardware in production for years at a time and want continuity in both suppliers and support for the systems they buy. Stratus, meanwhile, is aided by continuing a long-standing partnership. Showing other partners and customers that its acquisition by Smart Global Holdings hasn’t hampered the ability to forge deals is important and should help engender trust that its management will continue to do business as normal.
