Lexmark, Harman team up to advance Industry IoT solutions

Leveraging Lexmark’s Optra IoT technology and Harman’s domain expertise, the companies say its clients can develop new applications for Industry 4.0, remote monitoring and connected products.

Lexmark notes that Optra Edge combines edge computing hardware with a cloud-based management portal, enabling users to convert real-time data into actionable insights using pre-built AI/ML applications. It also acts as a translator between devices and back-end systems while providing local computation capabilities.

Known initially for manufacturing printers, supplies and accessories, Lexmark introduced Optra Edge in 2022.

According to Vishal Gupta, the senior vice president and chief technology and information officer at Lexmark, its proficiency in IoT for connected products and visual AI capabilities for connected operations “will provide Harman with rapid solution capabilities.” Gupta also mentions that by leveraging Harman’s extensive customer network, Lexmark can further expand its IoT business.

An upcoming offering is an AI-powered solution that detects anomalies and defects in manufacturing line products that aim to replace labor-intensive manual inspections. Lexmark says that its internal use of a similar solution resulted in a 40% speed improvement, a 99% error reduction, and an ROI within three months.
