Johnson Controls acquires FogHorn, integrates Edge AI platform in OpenBlue

Johnson Controls has officially completed the acquisition of edge intelligence software developer FogHorn. The terms of the deal were not announced.

Johnson, which posted $6.3B in revenue for fiscal 2021, said the move will support the company’s vision to improve smart autonomous buildings via the integration of Foghorn’s Edge artificial intelligence (AI) platform across the OpenBlue suite of connected solutions.

Following the integration, OpenBlue devices will be able to process data and apply intelligence at the edge using Foghorn’s Edge AI’s capabilities.

“Value is increasingly being created by applying intelligence at the edge-device level to create real-time, secure, actionable insights,” explained Johnson Controls CTO Vijay Sankaran.

With Foghorn’s Edge AI, “We are accelerating the pace towards our vision of smart, autonomous buildings that continuously learn, adapt, and automatically respond to the needs of the environment and people,” he said.

According to the terms of the Johnson Controls acquisition agreement, Foghorn Chief Technology Officer Sastry Malladi and the company’s technical team will become part of OpenBlue Solutions. FogHorn has 75 employees listed on LinkedIn and raised a total of $72.5M since its founding in 2014.

“We are thrilled to bring the Foghorn team and edge AI capabilities to Johnson Controls and OpenBlue,” said Malladi, who will now report to Sankaran as Vice President of OpenBlue.

“By combining our respective strengths, Johnson Controls can make an even bigger impact on continuing to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges of decarbonization, sustainability, and energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and smart, secure buildings.”

Johnson Controls reports 1Q 2022 earnings on Feb 8, 2022.
