Infineon strengthens its edge AI offering with Imagimob acquisition

Infineon Technologies has acquired the Stockholm-based startup Imagimob AB, a platform provider for machine learning solutions for edge devices.

Imagimob is a company that provides an end-to-end development platform for machine learning on edge devices, specializing in TinyML and AutoML. By acquiring 100% of the company’s shares, Infineon advances its edge AI offerings and adds a well regarded machine learning platform that has been used in over 40 projects with companies such as Scania, Husqvarna and Flir Systems.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. With 12 employees listed on LinkedIn, Infineon’s deal is about acquiring expertise and products.

Infineon’s president of the connected secure systems division, Thomas Rosteck, states “Artificial intelligence and machine learning is about to largely enter every embedded application and thus enable new functionalities. With Imagimob’s unique platform and expertise in developing robust machine learning solutions for edge devices, we further strengthen our ability to enable new levels of control and energy efficiency on our products while preserving privacy”.

TinyML is a machine learning and embedded systems branch that focuses on creating models suitable for small and low-powered devices, such as microcontrollers. Its goal is to enable low-latency, low-power, and low-bandwidth model inference on edge devices. Meanwhile, AutoML is a way to make machine learning accessible to people who are not experts.

Infineon executives say that the acquisition allows the company to provide a consistent user experience, allowing for quick implementation of solutions in various situations, including audio event identification, voice commands, anticipating maintenance needs, interpreting hand movements, identifying signals and recognizing materials. The companies say the combined expertise will also accelerate the adoption of TinyML.

Last year, Infineon collaborated with Memfault, a semiconductor manufacturer, to improve the efficiency of Infineon ModusToolbox engineers. The collaboration aimed to enhance the diagnostic capabilities, device observability, and remote updating of the Memfault platform for developers.
