IDC reports strong investment support for edge solutions over next two years

In IDC Research’s newest EdgeView 2022 survey, technology analysts reported there will be a continued increase in investment for edge solutions over the next two years. According to the survey, three-quarters of enterprises plan to increase their edge investments with an average increase of 37% to bring innovation and operational efficiency to operations.

Several factors are contributing to the strong investment in edge solutions, including the need to improve production capabilities and adopt new digital technologies that integrate edge applications, according to IDC. Organizations want to leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning, but increased data volume will require the use of edge computing. Other factors include the requirement for more physical servers with increased computational capability due to the increasing amount of data being stored at the edge locations.

“Enterprises are signaling that they want the benefits of a cloud operating model with the freedom to deploy anywhere,” said Dave McCarthy, research vice president, Cloud and Edge Infrastructure Services at IDC. “This creates tremendous opportunities for technology suppliers that can reduce complexity and maintain consistency in these distributed environments.”

The common reason to adopt edge technology is to improve customer experience, enhance products and services, and reduce product costs, according to the survey. Edge deployments also enable opportunities to fill market niches.

The EdgeView 2022 survey also reports the reasons for which there is a robust edge ecosystem. As a key selection criterion, organizations are looking to integrate edge solutions into the legacy infrastructure and reduce the entry requirements. As edge data increases, enterprises continue to deploy and support various compute, storage and network architectures to be able to deploy applications in multiple environments. Edge will continue to be deployed as a set of flexible resources in cloud, colocation, field locations, and company-owned datacenters. “In the next two years, two-thirds of organizations are expected to shift more toward public cloud resources. But overall, all edge types will increase,” IDC wrote.

“Edge infrastructure deployments are shifting IT back to a more strategic, influential role within the organization,” said Jennifer Cooke, research director, Edge Strategies. “The IT organization is both driving and supporting critical digital-first efforts within the broader organization.”
