Hardware roundup: Nexcom’s uCPE, Canaan investment, Vecow’s Azure certification
In hardware news this week, companies offered up announcements about new wireless hardware, investments in chip designers, and device certifications.
Nexcom, a supplier of network appliances, launched its new uCPE designed to enable businesses to leverage 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology. The DFA 1163 is an entry-level desktop appliance to enable 5G networks for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Anchored by Intel’s Atom C3000R processor, DFA 1163 offers a set of optional features, such as flexibility in CPU core count, up to 12 ports with PoE+ support, Wi-Fi 5/6 and 5G FR1 (Sub-6 GHz) or FR2 (up to 39 GHz) wireless connectivity.
Nexcom’s DFA 1163 will also support 5G over millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum and fits a variety of use cases, including edge computing, security gateway, wireless broadband gateway.
Canaan Inc., a provider of high-performance computing solutions, has entered into an agreement with Pixelworks Semiconductor Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (Pixelworks Semi), a subsidiary of Pixelworks, Inc. (NASDAQ: PXLW) to invest approximately $3.1 million in cash in exchange for an equity interest in Pixelworks Semi, subject to certain closing conditions. Pixelworks Semi designs and manufactures visual display processing semiconductors and custom application-specific integrated circuits (“ASIC”) solutions for video applications for smartphones, tablets, digital projection systems, high-quality video infrastructure equipment, and over-the-air streaming devices.
Vecow Co., Ltd., said it has joined the Azure Certified Device program. The company’s hardware and software has been pre-tested and verified to work with Azure IoT to ensure customers can get their IoT solutions up and running quickly. Vecow’s SPC-7000 Series (including the includes SPC-7000, SPC-7100 and SPC-7200) fanless Embedded Box PCs passed the test functionality with Microsoft Azure Certified Device.
