Google Cloud, Ericsson talk up partnership, pilots for unified 5G network, edge apps
Google Cloud and Ericsson are expanding their partnership with the two announcing that they are running a pilot program with Telecom Italia aimed at carmakers and other manufacturers. The project will automate the functions of Telecom Italia’s 5G core network and cloud-based applications, with a view bringing connectivity close to companies’ physical locations.
Additionally, the two announced they are developing new solutions at Ericsson’s Silicon Valley Lab. Already Ericsson has completed the ‘onboarding’ of Ericsson 5G to Anthos to enable telco edge and on-premise applications.

As Google and Ericsson executives noted in a recent blog post, “The network is on a path to become more accessible via APIs so that applications can call on and consume what they need from the networks in a more programmable way. This sets us up for more open architectures and ecosystems.”
Telco equipment maker Ericsson, the second largest in the world behind Huawei, has to tread a careful path between giving its customers the cloud-native services its carrier customers are increasingly looking for and cannibalizing its own mobile hardware business. Its approach appears to embrace the cloud, and embrace it broadly.
So far, Ericsson is working with all three major hyperscalers in one way or another with AWS and Microsoft partnerships in place in addition to the pre-existing one with Google. The open partner strategy sensible but a lot has to go right for Ericsson to win serious market share.
