Ficosa, Indie Semiconductor collaborate to develop AI-based automotive camera solutions

Ficosa, a company specializing in advanced automotive vision, has partnered with Indie Semiconductor, a provider of vision processing technology. This joint effort aims to develop automotive camera solutions leveraging neural network-based processing, with a goal to enhance safety through imaging and detection capabilities.

In this collaboration, Ficosa’s role involves utilizing its expertise in supplying cameras to vehicle manufacturers to develop a smart camera solution. Indie Semiconductor complements this by contributing through its high-performance image signal processing as part of its computer vision solutions.

As safety assessments for vehicles, such as the US and Euro NCAP, increasingly emphasize the protection of pedestrians and cyclists, the importance of safety for all road users is being recognized. In response to these regulatory changes, automotive manufacturers are seeking scalable camera-based Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) solutions.

“Ficosa’s relentless focus on developing robust camera solutions with the highest image quality and volume scalability is well matched to Indie’s innovative vision processing technologies,” says Jose Maria Forcadell, chief technology officer at Ficosa.

Indie Semiconductor notes that the existing generation of camera solutions, which rely on traditional vision algorithms, faces performance limitations in challenging object detection scenarios. However, the company highlights that their newly developed neural network-based AI vision solution delivers enhanced detection capabilities. This automotive smart vision solution is designed to be compact, making it particularly suitable for integration into edge devices.

“Indie is thrilled to partner with Ficosa, leveraging our next generation of Computer Vision solutions that integrate not only high-performance image signal processing but also the dedicated AI elements required for neural networks,” says Abhay Rai, executive vice president and general manager of Indie’s Vision Business Unit.

The first samples of the smart camera solutions are scheduled to be available in 2024, with the expectation of full-scale production by 2025.
