Equinix partners with Dish to provide digital edge infrastructure services for Open RAN-based 5G network
Equinix has entered a new partnership with Dish to provide digital infrastructure services in support of the first cloud-native, Open RAN-based 5G network in the United States.
Through the collaboration with Equinix, Dish will now have access to the interconnection infrastructure in Equinix’s International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in the U.S.
“Dish is taking the lead in delivering on the promise of 5G in the U.S., and our partnership with Equinix will enable us to secure critical interconnections for a nationwide 5G network,” explained Jeff McSchooler, Dish executive vice president of wireless network operations.
At the time of writing, Equinix counts over 1,800 networks and over 2,900 cloud, IT, and system integrator services globally.
The company last September deployed a first-of-its-kind, fully functional 5G and Edge Technology Development Center in Dallas, Texas, in collaboration with Nokia.
Dish, on the other hand, has been developing its open, cloud-native 5G network for some time now, recently announcing a separate partnership with Dell.
The collaboration between Equinix and Dish will now build on the companies’ individual efforts to build a 5G network based on extensive network infrastructure.
“5G will have a transformative impact on the way the world connects and does business, but it requires a modern, connected underlying infrastructure at the edge,” explained Jon Lin, Equinix President in the U.S.
“Dish will leverage our extensive ecosystem of network partners and cloud providers to deliver a fast, powerful 5G network to communities across the United States,” Lin concluded.
