EnOcean acquires Renesas’ edge computing business to enhance building, factory management

EnOcean, an IoT device and sensor-to-cloud solution provider, has announced that it has acquired assets from Renesas‘ edge computing solutions business. The transition included employees and hardware and software goods, all of which were completed on October 1st.

According to the company, EnOcean’s harvesting sensors and cloud-based software solutions reduce energy consumption and carbon footprints in buildings. They enable users to gain deep insights into building operations, helping them be more efficient in using their assets and real estate. Adding edge computing from Renesas will make data accessible from existing building infrastructure systems. These systems include heating and cooling mechanisms and lighting fixtures. They will allow companies to reduce carbon footprints further, decrease energy bills and improve building performance, EnOcean says.

“EnOcean has always been very keen on delivering innovative and sustainable solutions that have a real benefit for companies by creating energy-efficient, flexible, and overall better buildings,” said Raoul Wijgergangs, CEO of EnOcean. “This acquisition brings us, our partners, and our customers one step closer to a carbon-neutral future.”

Renesas SmartServer IoT is an open multi-protocol IoT edge server designed for smart buildings, cities and factories. This out-of-the-box solution gives access to industrial sensors, devices, web services and industrial clients such as CMS, BMS and SCADA systems. The solution can be used as a stand-alone server or linked with another management system to perform local and remote monitoring.

“Together, we’re building on our technologies to provide next-generation solutions for smart buildings that focus on sustainability, waste reduction, and occupant experience,” said Apurba Pradhan, business unit director of industrial edge computing at Renesas. “We’re excited about this shared journey on which we provide a seamless solution that paves the way for sustainable, maintenance-free, and cost-effective IoT solutions, and I’m certain that we’ll see very good growth opportunities for the two companies together.”
