Edge Video tests AWS Lambda for edge content delivery – with 5-10X less bandwidth

Edge Video this week announced that its latest major test demonstrated a 10X cost reduction for livestreaming. The test connected over 1,000 HTML5 video players to the Edge Video network and cut bandwidth by 135.6GB  down to just 400MB. The test feed was Sky News live via YouTube.

Based on Edge Video’s pricing of $.008 per GB streamed, that’s a 10X cost reduction for AWS or Azure customers or 15X for Google Cloud customers.

The company notes that in addition to the compelling business case, serverless livestreaming also delivers higher quality video for end users. For example, if an AWS livestreaming customer wanted to increase video quality by 200%, then a 5X cost reduction could then be achieved. Or if a livestream was HD(1024p) then switching to 4K (400% more data), then a cost reduction of 60% and still deliver 4x the quality.
