Edge computing to play key role in future 5G applications, Huawei’s new white paper suggests

A new white paper published by Huawei in collaboration with more than 20 industry partners has highlighted upcoming technological trends connected to the rise of 5G applications.

According to the report, edge computing will be the foundation of future 5G architecture, alongside “Cloud Native” and network as a service (NaaS) solutions.

“Edge network is an efficient deployment form that combines distributed network architecture and edge services,” reads the report.

The 24-page document also mentions industrial networks, and how they need to deliver a “deterministic service experience.”

In order to do so, 5G infrastructure will have to rely on “converged” technologies, defined as those focusing on industry-specific, home, and space-air-ground integration networks.

“In the process of end-to-end 5G-Advanced network evolution, the evolution of the core network plays a pivotal role,” the report stated.

“On the one hand, the core network is connected to various services and applications, which is the convergence point and hub of the entire network business and the assistor of future business development. On the other hand, the core network is connected to various standard terminals and access networks, the whole network topology.”

According to Huawei, at the center of these two trends is promoting 5G core network technology and architecture based on actual business needs.

“This will help operators improve return on investment and help industry users better use 5G networks to achieve digital transformation,” says the report.

Applications related to this transformation will include extended reality (XR), multimedia services, edge computing, network intelligence, and passive Internet of Things (IoT).

The new paper was released by Huawei alongside China Mobile, SKT, and du, among others, at the MWC22 Barcelona event last week.

During the keynote conference, Duan Xiaodong from China Mobile Research Institute, Richard Liu from Huawei Cloud, Peter Jarich from GSMA Intelligence, and Monica Zethzon from Ericsson all shared their views about 5G and how the technology will grow over the next few years.
