The digital landscape in Africa and around the world has witnessed a profound impact due to the Covid-19 pandemic and is now removing in the post pandemic era. Now more than ever the value of connectivity for social and economic welfare is being realised and has gained importance. The African telecommunication space has developed and has positively and significantly affected the growth of the economies on the continent in many ways. From enabling access to banking through mobile phones to interlinking the formal and informal economies that exist in the region.

Despite changes in data consumption patterns, the telecom industry in Africa has risen to the challenge of keeping businesses and individuals connected. Africa’s telecommunication sector has been growing rapidly over recent years, driven mainly by the mobile services segment. Mobile telephone subscriptions grew at a CAGR of 8.3% over the 2009–2019 period, the fastest in the world and above the global CAGR of 6%, according to ITU data. That helped Africa claim a share of 11.9% of all mobile users worldwide in 2019.

Effective management of spectrum is also key to maximise the opportunities that mobile connectivity brings forth. Ensuring that required spectrum resources are available, under conducive conditions, will lower broadband costs, increase coverage and boost connectivity. The 2020s will witness a strong growth in the number of Africans connected to mobile networks. As 4G and 5G grow together, through the decade to come, spectrum preparation can enable cost efficiency and promote growth.

With this as a driver, ICSA presents Connected Africa 2022. The Summit will deliberate on, and focus on developing solutions to, critical ICT issues. The Summit is a not to be missed opportunity for experts, business people, and practitioners to discuss practical and cost-effective solutions to developing the ICT business.
