Cloudflare releases application customization platform, database service for Workers

Cloudflare launched Cloudflare for Platforms, a set of tools that enable developers to modify applications using the latest open API standards to cut reliance on external servers.

With Cloudflare for Platforms, Cloudflare says the customizability will enable organizations to allow developers to program an application to their desire while at the same time ending reliance on costly servers, massive developer resources, and external consultants. It is built on Cloudflare Workers, a serverless solution to deploy code across Cloudflare’s network.

“Five years ago Cloudflare built our serverless computing platform, Cloudflare Workers, to give all of our customers the ability to program the way Cloudflare worked for themselves,” says Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare. “Cloudflare Workers is one of the fastest and most widely adopted edge computing products that provides limitless possibilities for our customers. Now we’re taking this formula and helping any organization do the same, using the scale, speed, and flexibility of Cloudflare’s global network.”

Along with Cloudflare for Platforms, the company is partnering with organizations to create new API standards for developers to form a foundation of for applications can be built in the future. The goal is to help developers take advantage of the scale and flexibility of edge computing that can offer:

  • a fast and scalable environment;
  • easy viewing of code;
  • common API standards shareable between Cloudflare Workers, Deno, and Node.js;
  • analytics tools;
  • secure custom domains for software-as-a-solution use cases.

Cloudflare noted in its annual investor meeting that Workers has already been adopted by 15% of its customer base, and expects that number to grow as it adds these and other capabilities, including a Workers database built on SQLite.

The company also made a significant step with the decision to open source its runtime for Workers, which will allow developers the option to run and test Workers in environments outside of the Cloudflare network — and worry less about vendor lock in.

In November 2021, Cloudflare was named a “leader” and “the best fit for companies that need global support for web and content workloads,” in a Forrester New Wave report. The report also said Cloudflare’s edge development platform is a good solution for development teams interested in building high-performance websites and supporting personalized content.
