Beacon EmbeddedWorks develops a SOM based on NXP i.MX 8M Plus processor

Beacon EmbeddedWorks, a developer of embedded electronics, has introduced the i.MX 8M Plus system-on-module and its companion Zoom Development Kit. Equipped with an AI accelerator, the module offers processing capabilities and allows for customizable configurations to meet specific requirements.

The module has been designed to address the demands of high-definition video and graphics tasks, with the aim of also serving as a resource for the development of artificial intelligence and machine learning applications.

The i.MX 8M Plus system-on-module is built upon NXP Semiconductors’ i.MX 8M Plus processor. The processor features up to four Arm Cortex-A53 cores running at a clock speed of 1.8 GHz, along with a neural processing unit. Beacon EmbeddedWorks claim that the hardware combination delivers robust performance for edge computing applications, enabling the execution of complex AI algorithms at the edge of the network.

Tested and pre-certified, the Zoom Development Kit comprises the system-on-module, a baseboard, power supply, microSD card, and all necessary cables. The size of the board and its regulatory compliance are important considerations for mission-critical use cases, the company notes.

In terms of wireless connectivity, the system-on-module offers both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities, featuring integrated secure elements to ensure end-to-end security for applications necessitating secure communication.

The module also supports camera and display functionalities through MIPI DSI and MIPI CSI-2 interfaces, each supporting up to four lanes. For audio needs, there are six synchronous audio interfaces available.

The module includes interfaces, such as USB 3.1 Gen 1, Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter (UART), Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C), Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), and multiplexed GPIO pins to support various peripheral devices and sensors.
