Alef collaborates with LittleBird to leverage private 5G for smart home network connectivity

Alef is teaming up with Littlebird to provide wireless connectivity services and APIs to develop smart home networks in residential communities across the United States. The companies say the multi-million dollar deal with Littlebird, a smart technology platform for residential communities, provides a cost-efficient edge solution that aims to optimize smart home automation.

As part of the deal, Littlebird will integrate Alef’s LTE/5G core services to enable private mobile networks using Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) spectrum for video intercom and smartphone access readers. With the incorporation of private 5G connectivity, Littlebird can  provide more smart home automation devices in remote locations. Alef’s APIs for private mobile networks will become an alternative to the traditional mobile network operations and deliver a cost-effective solution with low latency.

“Through this partnership, Alef will provide Littlebird with an alternate path to traditional network providers using CBRS spectrum. This ultimately removes the cost of deploying a full-stack network, and increases efficiency of applications run via our programmable APIs,” said Mike Mulica, CEO at Alef.

Littlebird’s smart home technology applications for residential properties allow users to interact with smart edge devices and create a “safe and convenient” resident experience. The company provides smart home, smart access, and smart community services for residential properties within the United States. Residents experience “well-connected” management through in-app smart community features that allow them to take advantage of smartphone payment services, self-serve reservations, mobile requests, instant maintenance notifications, and more.

However, to keep up with smart home automation technology, a dedicated network for the successful delivery of applications is required. Alef’s 5G core services for building private mobile networks provide the required connectivity for both newly constructed and older properties.

“Our partnership with Alef unlocks the ability to bring this platform to properties that previously might not have been a good fit, increasing our growth potential and ability to serve more residents,” said Ryan Maguire, general manager at Littlebird.

Earlier this year, Alef acquired CareerGig, an online marketplace for freelancers and IT professionals. As a result, Alef says it accelerated the adoption of an edge solution by providing mobile developers with its enterprise grade suite of APIs to build custom private 5G mobile networks and applications.

“Smart home functions and smart services offer value to residents and are in high demand, and we look forward to working alongside Littlebird to provide these capabilities,” Mulica further added.
