Akamai launches distributed compute regions for low-latency edge apps
Akamai has introduced distributed compute regions to enhance performance for edge-native applications by reducing latency through proximity to end users.
These regions are available in 10 major locations across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, addressing the needs of global organizations.
Developers face challenges in building low-latency applications while managing costs and processing large data volumes.
“Our long history as a CDN provider has allowed us to establish relationships with edge data centers. Akamai saw the opportunity to bring powerful, production-ready cloud computing services to select Akamai edge locations in the form of a new type of cloud computing region”, says Maddie Presland, a Senior Product Marketing Specialist at Akamai in a recent blog post.
Beta testing showed that dedicated instances in distributed regions exceeded performance expectations for application developers. Access to these distributed regions is limited to qualified customers.
Deploying compute instances to distributed compute regions is good approach for a number of different use cases including, but not limited to: gaming, social media, live streaming, AI inference and more.
