ABB and Red Hat team for industrial edge and hybrid cloud operational efficiency

ABB and Red Hat announced a collaboration to allow industries using ABB’s process automation and industrial software to scale using Red Hat’s OpenShift enterprise Kubernetes platform. As part of the partnership, ABB process automation, a technology that manages, collects and analyzes industrial plant data, will leverage the Red Hat OpenShift unified application platform. This will simplify the development and management efforts at the industrial edge.

To aid the industrial ecosystem with additional deployment capabilities, the joint solution will deliver automation and industrial software technology. Customers will benefit from the combined industrial edge solution, which allows them to explore the potential of data-driven decisions to improve operational efficiency, all while maintaining safety, security and productivity needs.

“Together, we intend to streamline the transition from automated to autonomous operations and address current, and future manufacturing needs using open-source technologies,” said Matt Hicks, executive vice president, Products and Technologies, Red Hat. “As we work to break down barriers between IT and the plant level, we look to drive limitless innovation and mark a paradigm shift in operational technology based on open source.”

ABB process automation offers a wide range of business solutions through its industry-specific integrated automation, electrification, digital solutions, control technologies, software, advanced services, measurement and analytics. As an end-to-end solutions provider, ABB distributed control systems are designed to monitor and control plant productivity and maximize asset utilization, process efficiency, and production quality.

The partnership enables the virtualization and containerization of automation software through Red Hat OpenShift, giving customers flexibility and optimized deployment, according to Red Hat. The technology also includes system orchestration for real-time, data-driven decision-making at the edge and further cloud processing.

“The alliance with Red Hat will see ABB continue helping our customers improve their operations as they navigate a rapidly evolving digital landscape,” said Bernhard Eschermann, chief technology officer, ABB Process Automation. “It will give them access to the tools they need to integrate plantwide IT and OT, while reducing risks and optimizing performance.”

Red Hat recently enhanced its hybrid cloud solution by including a cross-platform portfolio edge capability to help enterprises adopt edge computing architecture through Red Hat’s Edge initiatives. The company also extended its strategic partnership with Accenture to speed up solutions for a cloud-drive edge computing ecosystem.
